Will you answer the call?
Not sure if many of you remember, but last summer I wrote a post about Steven James–founder of Kenya Relief. I wrote about Steve as an example of what someone’s yes looks like. What I didn’t share last summer was the story that was birthed out of the post.
Last August while at Bryce Canyon Lodge, I sent Steve a draft of the post I wanted to share about him. As soon as the email sent, we packed up the kids and headed for Navajo Loop Trail. It was still early and sunny, but already crowded. Right before we began to make our descent into the canyon, my phone started ringing. I thought…Who in the world is calling me? Steven James.
Steve had read the draft and decided to call. I was glad he was pleased with the post, but I couldn’t get a clear grasp on why he was calling. He was fishing and I was distracted by the kids, tourists and inherent dangers of the canyon.
The call ended ten minutes later. Tim asked…”What did he say?”. I said…I’m not really sure, but I think he’s asking if we’re interested in moving to Kenya.
My head was spinning.
My spirit was screaming a weak “yes”, but my brain was yelling a pretty loud…are you crazy??
I almost hated to call Steve back. And I didn’t, for a month. When I finally called, I got the impression maybe I had misunderstood the question.
Steve didn’t ask me to move to Kenya but he did mention the need for someone to help organize the first Breast Cancer Screening Clinic at Kenya Relief in Migori, Kenya. Did I want to help lead it? Well, I don’t know anything about Breast Cancer other than getting my yearly mammogram. But, if it was between moving to Kenya or leading a BC Screening Clinic I said Yes!! I would love to lead the BC Clinic!!
Once again, I found myself in over my head.
Steve and I prayed, brainstormed, and recruited qualified professionals. We made plans to host the clinic in April 2020 but then we were side-lined by COVID-19!!
Too bad cancer didn’t get the memo. It didn’t realize the whole world stopped for COVID-19 and it should have stopped with the rest of the world. Instead, it has continued to attack and leave a path of suffering in it’s wake.
It makes me think about the passage of Jesus gong through the towns and villages teaching, preaching and healing. It says… When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest fields. ” Matthew 9: 35-38
God keeps opening my eyes to those who are suffering. Maybe I can’t heal every disease, but I hope He will use me to offer hope, comfort and aid. I hope He will use me to point others to the One who can save, save bodies and souls.
In March 2021, we hope to facilitate the BC Screening Clinic in Kenya.
Maybe God’s not asking you to move to Kenya. Maybe He’s not asking you to go to Kenya. But maybe he’s asking you to give to Kenya?
COVID-19 has created a new need in Kenya. Kenya Relief needs a school bus. It needs to provide students in the surrounding area a safe way to reach their school and receive a Christ-centered education. Is God’s asking you to give a child a ride to school?
He is calling me….is He calling you?
KR needs to raise $69,000 to buy a bus. Will you consider donating and giving a child a ride to school?
