Six good books…

Some of the things I enjoy most about summer are the longer days, more relaxed pace and time to read.  If you are looking for a book to read, hop over to the blog to check out 6 books I have enjoyed this summer.  God has used each book to challenge, chisel or spur me on in the faith.

Technically, I read this one in the spring.  Katie explores what it looks like to wrestle with God.  Wrestle with Him over disappointments, hardships, pain and when His answers to our prayers don’t “seem” good.  Jacob wrestled with God.  I have  found that although my seasons of wrestling with God are times of deep intimacy with Him, sometimes I still walk away with a limp.  A tangible reminder of both the pain/hardship and the sweetness of intimacy with Him.

A must read for moms of girls (and maybe even boys because what affects our daughters will eventually affect our sons)!!  Vicki confronts the reader with hard truths.  It is disheartening to read the statistics regarding the issues that face our families and daughters in particular.  She exposes many traps the enemy has set for our daughters and uses scripture to strengthened and encourage us (as mothers) to help our daughters successfully navigate our culture and this season.  With great wisdom and discernment she exposes subtle lies society continuously  pours into us.(Would love to discuss this book if anyone is up for it!)

Rarely do we study the Holy Spirit.  I really enjoyed this book as a more in-depth look at scriptures exploring the Holy Spirit.  Bevere reviews the triune God but concentrates on the purpose and power of the Holy Spirit.  Bevere does a great job tempering deep theological truths with practical life application.

Tim brought home the Telois Man.  Apparently, Telois means the “finished or completed” man in Greek.  And since I am raising 3 boys and have a husband, I thought it might be wise for me to read this one.  Titus’ ministry and book center around encouraging men to rise up and walk out the full purpose for which God created them.  He encourages men to fight against mediocrity by depending on God/Holy Spirit to rule each area of their lives.  He explores what it looks like to be a completed man in regards to your private life, marriage, family, finances, manners and more!!

This is the book I referenced in my last blog post.  And yes it (or I) hit a slump around page 60.  So glad I pressed on! Eventually I found myself underling a lot and even writing in the margins. Bevere explores faith and grace.  With faith and the empowerment of God’s grace all things are possible.  He encourages us to believe and get out of the boat even when walking on water seems impossible.

I love this book.  It is a devotional Tim and I, or the family, read a couple of times a week. Each devotional is a little mystery Cahn unravels to reveal a greater truth or mission for us as followers of Christ.  He is a Messianic Rabbi.  He uses his knowledge of Jewish history, customs, beliefs and celebrations to further explain the significance of the Bible in a way most of us Gentiles would not understand.  I seem to stand amazed by each one-page devotion.

Maybe one of these books will resonate with you and spur you along in your journey as well.  Happy reading!
